Documenting your day

8 July 2009

Over several glasses of wine last night, my husband and I showed off our wedding DVD to some new friends and to say they were impressed is an understatement.

Of all the services you will call upon to make your wedding day a success, I can’t stress how important having your day captured on video is.

Of course we all want photographic images of the day but if you’re on a tight budget and you can’t have both a photographer AND a videographer, consider this - I don’t know anyone that turns up to a wedding camera-less. Everyone will be taking photos of you on the day and some of the images are bound to be top quality but it’s highly unlikely that several people will front up with a hand-held camcorder, which is why I encourage couples to hire a professional. It’s not cheap and if you want the best, of course you will have to pay for it but having your day documented in such a way is priceless.

The luxury of having all those memories locked away for safe-keeping is something you should not overlook. It’s not only about being able to re-live the moments again and again, noticing the small things that you missed on the day, but for me, it’s about being able to listen to my Father’s overwhelming speech over and over, to hear my Mum’s excited gasp as she heard the bagpipes for the first time on my walk down the aisle and to hear my new husband pay tribute to me with a lump in his throat and tears in his eyes.

To be sat more than 10,000 miles from my parents in my living room and re-capture the emotion whenever I desire is something I cannot describe. It was the best investment not only for us as Antipodeans living abroad but also for the families we live so far from. They each have their own copy of the DVD and to them it is an invaluable token of their proudest day.

So if you save on favours and cut corners on place cards, don’t scrimp on your videographer. It’s a service you will inevitably regret not using. Watch the foolowing video and perhaps you'll agree.
